Brachystola magna, one of the largest grasshoppers in North America, is widely distributed on the western plains of the United States and Mexico. It inhabits prairies, scrublands, semi-deserts, and margins of agricultural areas. These flightless grasshoppers are predominantly green or brown; adult length 43-55 mm. They feed on many species of forbs, especially Asteraceae (including Helianthus spp. and Ambrosia spp.), small invertebrates, and carrion. B. magna may appears in large numbers in some years, but then not be seen for many years.
